Jackie Robinson
Class of 2023 Inductee
John Muir(Pasadena)
Player (QB)
Accomplishments
During High School:
- The baseball immortal was a football star at Muir for the 1935 and 1936 seasons.
- Played QB and could be listed as Athlete or MultiPurpose.
- In 1935, he was a junior and played QB.
- Stats or other info not easy to find, but Muir’s team that season clearly was one of the best in SoCal.
- Robinson had a TD pass when Muir defeated Hoover of San Diego in the CIFSS playoffs, 27-0. Hoover came into that game at 7-0-1 and had outscored foes 196-14. That put Muir’s record at 10-1 with just a one-point loss to Santa Barbara. The team, however, was not allowed to play Santa Barbara in the championship game as a player should have been ineligible. Santa Barbara went on to win in the final.
- Note that Long Beach Poly (9-0) wasn’t part of CIFSS playoffs in that season along with other schools in a league that included San Diego High. We do know that in 1936, which would have been Jackie’s senior season, that Muir went 7-2-1.
During college:
- 4-sport star, started at Pasadena City College and still holds Rose Bowl Stadium record for longest Kickoff return for a TD.
- Later went on to UCLA and starred in four sports.
Post-college:
- Star baseball player for the Dodgers that broke the color barrier and stands as one of the most iconic and influential athletes ever to play any sport
